Carbon Credits Explained: What Solar Owners Should Know

By VOX Energy Team • July 3, 2026 • Sustainability

A carbon credit represents one metric ton of carbon dioxide (or equivalent greenhouse gas) that has been avoided or removed from the atmosphere. Organizations and projects — including solar power plants — that measurably reduce emissions compared to a baseline (such as grid electricity generation) can, in some cases, generate credits that are sold to buyers seeking to offset their own emissions.

For solar projects, the emissions reduction is generally calculated using a grid emission factor: the amount of COâ‚‚ that would have been produced by conventional power generation for the same number of units. Recognized standards such as Verra's Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) or the Gold Standard provide the methodologies, monitoring and verification frameworks required to issue tradeable credits.

It's important to understand that carbon credit values are market-driven and vary based on project type, verification standard, and buyer demand — figures provided in early feasibility calculators are estimates only, not guaranteed income. Verification and registration also carry their own costs and timelines.

VOX Energy's carbon credit consultancy helps commercial and industrial clients understand whether their project profile is suitable for carbon credit pursuit, and connects them with the right verification pathway.
